As one of the premiere producers, directors and performers of our time, legend Quincy Jones is constantly at the forefront of collaborations, yet recently he has been in the media for something entirely different. It seems the famed trumpeter/musical director has begun pulling the jazz world into the hip-hop culture, whether purposely or not.
Case in point, today the news is abuzz with the Quincy and Kanye “controversy.” As you may have heard, Q called ‘Ye “just a rapper” a few days back in an interview with US Weekly. Today, Q is quoted as explaining that his statement was out of context. “Did he write for a symphony orchestra? Does he write for a jazz orchestra? Come on, man. He’s just a rapper. There’s no comparison…I spent 28 years learning my first skill. I don’t rap. It’s not the same thing.” Are we destined for an angry Kanye quote? Probably.
On a better note, if you haven’t seen them yet, Q has also come out with a signature line of headphones (Move over Dre!) with AKG. His Twitter reports that they are now available for purchase on MusiciansFriend.com. It seems Quincy is leading the jazz world into the mainstream of hip-hop controversy and technology whether he wants to or not.
