DROM got lit up Thursday night with point on performances by the likes of Illa J (who also took a stab at the piano for his set), T3 of Slum Village, and Q-Tip who was later joined by fellow Tribe member Jarobi for a few classics including “Award Tour,” which closed out the night. In between sets DJ Metaphysic and Mick Boogie held down the Dilla duty, parsing through Jay’s tracks to the delight of the audience. Overall the night was made special by the love put into it by all of the performers, as well as Ma Dukes and Joylette Hunter, head of the J Dilla Foundation and Dilla’s former fiancé.
Q-Tip was on hand to honor his friend and peer as well as perform an array of Dilla tracks, Tribe hits, and his own solo material. As always, he left everyone in the building wanting more as he left the stage.
…especially since he brought up Jarobi for a quick mini-Tribe reunion.
Tip spent most of the night behind the computer spinning his own beats while rapping along to the delight of the audience.
T3 and Illa J started off the night performing a Dilla Tribute set that sent the crowd into an excitement that lasted the rest of the night. But, not only was the event a concert, but also a fundraiser for the J Dilla Foundation. Check out some highlights and interviews:
They both performed separate sets, but then got on stage together for some joint tracks which pumped up the energy level throughout DROM.
