A hand selected group of the panelists discuss the revival of jazz music through its marriage with hip-hop. Panelists talk about GURU’s legacy, how the use of new technologies has redefined the concept of jazz (formerly known as a genre stuck in a state of unchangeability) and what Miles Davis would play if he was still alive.

MODERATOR Brian Ellis Revive Music Group

Born to a middle-class family in White Plains, NY, BRIAN ELLIS spent most of his life in New Jersey and Connecticut (where he moved right before high school). It was in Connecticut that he first began to get interested in hip-hop, constantly writing rhymes and working on beats as often as he could. Nicknamed “Raydar” by his friends because of his habit of researching and tracking down information, Ellis enrolled in North Carolina A&T State University to study electrical engineering. However, after two years Raydar decided he wanted to pursue music seriously, and transferred to Berklee College of Music in Boston to study music synthesis and business. As he continued making beats and writing rhymes, Raydar produced and released his debut album Late Pass on Boston-based Brick Records in 2006. He returned to his alma mater in fall 2008, Berklee College of Music, as a teacher and the first professor of hip-hop. Raydar began by teaching hip-hop ensemble, spoken word ensemble and turntable technique. Raydar has produced the critically-acclaimed Boombox by Raheem Jamal and with Quite Nyce co-produced Champs vs. The League. He has been a guest artist/producer with Esoteric on “Boston Garden Rap” &”First of a New Breed”, and Chris “Daddy” Dave’s remix “Private Party” performed by Michelle Williams. Raydar has also shared the stage with many great artists including, Michelle N’degeocello, The Experiment, Adam Deitch, Ben Williams, Igmar Thomas, Mos Def, Sonnymoon, Questlove, Slum Village, Supernatural, Pharoahe Monch, Dj Wreckineyez, Phonte, John Robinson, Marc Cary, Marcus Strickland, Esperanza Spalding, Cee-lo, John Cena, Pete Rock, J-Live, 7L& Esoteric and Abraham Inc. to name a few. Raydar is a longtime contributor for Revive Music Group and The Revivalist ( Revive Music Group produces events that highlight the fusion of jazz and hip-hop in pop culture. Meghan Stabile Revive Music Group

MEGHAN STABILE is one of the greatest visionaries and music trailblazers of our generation. An alumnus of Berklee College of Music, Stabile began producing a series of events under the pseudonym of Revive Da Live, marrying the essence of improvisation and authentic expression of both jazz and hip-hop music in a completely new way. Stabile’s most resonating recent work was the Roy Ayers Tribute, featuring The Robert Glasper Experiment, Stefon Harris, and Pete Rock, which has toured internationally. Her work as President/CEO of Revive Music Group has spawned a new creative culture of live music productions; her consulting business has increased musician advocacy, and her co-ownership of The Revivalist has redefined music journalism.

Erin DavisProducer Miles Davis Properties

ERIN DAVIS, son of late jazz icon Miles Davis, is a Venice-based musician/producer who heads Ghost Media (his production company), and runs Miles Davis Properties, LLC along with his sister (Cheryl Davis) and his cousin (Vince Wilburn, Jr.). Erin has toured with Miles and has also informally recorded with him. He is currently focusing on scoring films. Erin recently composed the score for “Caught In The Crossfire,” starring Adam Rodriguez, Chris Klein and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson along with the Independent film “Corked.” His production credits include the recent Kyle Eastwood release. (Eastwood is the son of actor Clint Eastwood). Previously, Erin was the drummer for EMI Records recording group Bloodline, an all-star rock group featuring the offspring of famous musicians.

DJ Logic Turntablist DJ Logic

The theorem of turntablist as musician has been long proven in the capable hands of DJ LOGIC, whom with jazz as his foundation has become a wax innovator by crossing genres and sprinkling his sound across the map. As one of the world’s most accomplished turntablist’s, DJ Logic is widely credited for introducing jazz into the hip – hop realms and is considered by most as a highly respected session musician and an innovative bandleader.While the context of his work may vary, DJ Logic’s spinning skills are definitely beyond reproach. He works with a phenomenal roster of invited guests, and he knows how to pick his collaborators as well as his samples. With a growing catalogue of recordings under his belt, DJ Logic’s supreme musicianship and eclectic tastes will allow him to journey wherever an infectious groove may take him.

Vincent Wilburn Jr CEO Nefdrum Productions

VINCE WILBURN, JR., nephew of late jazz icon Miles Davis, oversees Miles Davis Properties, LLC, along with Erin Davis (son of Miles) and Cheryl Davis (daughter of Miles). Wilburn, Jr. is a highly accomplished drummer and producer, who has both toured and recorded with Miles on many legendary recordings from 1984 through 1987, including: The GRAMMY-Award winning album “AURA” — which he co-produced; “Decoy” – which he also co-produced; “You’re Under Arrest”, and the 2008 GRAMMY nominated “Miles From India” – which hit #8 on the Billboard jazz charts. He founded Nefdrum Productions in 1989 and has been busy with many projects, including all-star performances by music icons Billy Preston, Ray Parker, Jr., Darryl Jones, Charley Drayton, Ivan Neville, Wah Wah Watson, Freddie Washington, Randy Hall and Phil Upchurch. His long range project has been assembling a full length hip-hop, remix tribute to Miles Davis, which integrates jazz with hip hop. Wilburn previously co-produced the critically acclaimed Miles remix EP – “Evolution of the Groove,” featuring Nas and Santana. He is also Executive Producer of the forthcoming Miles Davis bio-pic, starring Don Cheadle, who will also make his directorial debut.
