London’s legend of the mic, Omar Lye-Fook, will be joined by one of our favorite beatboxing, producing talents, Taylor McFerrin, for a free duo performance at the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn this coming Saturday (6/2/12). McFerrin has been gaining buzz from the release of his debut EP Broken Vibes which features his unique blend of beatboxing, musicianship, and production. He was subsequently signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label and plans to release a full length LP entitled Early Riser in the fall. Omar meanwhile has been gracing the stage with artists ranging from Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder to Guru and Ol’ Dirty Bastard since the ’80s. Interestingly, Omar also has a background in classical trumpet, piano, and percussion, so it will be exciting to see how the two artists mix their talents.

The concert is part of Weeksville’s Brilliant Corners series which “presents emerging, mid-career, and legacy Jazz artists that represent revolutionary talent and artistry. In the tradition of the Free Form jazz movement we are interested in ways that artist are challenging the boundaries of their practice and the jazz genre by interrogating conventions in areas such as collaboration, harmonic structures, experimental improvisation, interdisciplinary work, and instrumentation. Past artists have included Billy Bang, Olu Dara, Melvin Gibbs, Alice Smith, Jose James and Gregory Porter.”
