The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music hits the the Highline Ballroom Tuesday 9/18/12 to present three generations of alumni in their NuSkuMu concert. The alum-filled lineup includes Moon Hooch and Corey King and TAFFY, as well as world-renowned guitarist Peter Bernstein performing new music commissioned for this evening’s concert, presented by a band assembled exclusively for this performance which will include fellow alums Sam Yahel and Grégoire Maret, along with Dwayne Burno, and Greg Hutchinson.

“The incredible talent and diversity of expression in our school will be on full display in these three marvelous and very different alumni ensembles we’re presenting on Sept 18.  They all share brilliant artistry and the experience of New School, bringing something musically unique, making this a night not to be missed!” – Martin Mueller, Executive Director of the New School

Group Bios:

MOON HOOCH: Mike Wilbur* (tenor sax); Wenzl McGowen* (contrabass clarinet); James Muschler* (drums)

This two saxes-and-drumset trio plays Cave Music; it’s like House, but more wild, more jagged, and more free. Moon Hooch started off busking in subways and quickly gained a reputation for inciting “subway raves” (and were banned from performing at the Bedford Ave. L station for “starting too many dance parties”), and also for their strange instrumentation, and explosive live show. These humble beginnings have led to a stint as house band for the Australian TV show “Hamish and Andy’s Gap Year” and a national tour opening for Mike Doughty. http://moonhooch.bandcamp.com/

COREY KING and TAFFY: Corey King* (bone/compositions); Takuya Kuroda* (trumpet); Max Siegel (bass trombone); Leo Genovese (keys); Adam Agati (guitar); Vicente Archer (bass); Adam Jackson* (drums)

Since moving to New York City from Houston, TX in 2004, trombonist Corey King has become one of the hottest musicians on the scene, known for his blazing creativity and incredible versatility. When Esperanza Spalding, Ludacris, or Mark Ronson need that something extra in their band, they call Corey King. He has also performed with Jason Moran, Gil-Scott Heron, Wyclef Jean, Dr. Lonnie Smith, fellow New School Jazz alum Jose James, Mary J. Blige, and countless other top artists. Along with his band TAFFY, he co-leads ERIMAJ with fellow New School Jazz alum, drummer Jamire Williams.
PETER BERNSTEIN* (guitar); with Sam Yahel* (piano); Grégoire Maret* (harmonica); Dwayne Burno (bass); and Greg Hutchinson (drums) ***COMMISSIONED WORKS***

Known for his clean, warm tone and lyrical melodic lines, guitarist Peter Bernstein was mentored by the legendary Jim Hall during his time at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. After playing duo with Hall (a partnership which continues to this day today), Bernstein became one of the top names in jazz starting in the 90’s, playing with fellow New School Jazz alum Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, and most recently as a member of Sonny Rollins’ quintet. Bernstein was commissioned by the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music to create a new band specifically for NuSkuMu at the Highline, featuring fellow New School Jazz alums, pianist Sam Yahel and harmonicist Grégoire Maret, along with Dwayne Burno on bass, and Greg Hutchinson on drums. The repertoire will include brand new compositions by Bernstein as well as those of Maret and Yahel, and always a few standards thrown in for fun! http://www.peterbernsteinmusic.com/
