Legendary frontman of the Ohio Players Leroy Bonner died last week at the age of 69. “Sugarfoot” sang and played guitar with the group that dominated the charts in the ’70s with their thick-bottomed funk and R&B as well as their entertaining visual aesthetic. This week, Detroit-native producer and musician Karriem Riggins payed homage to one of Sugarfoot’s most sampled tracks.
Bits and pieces of “Funky Worm” can be heard on tracks by De La Soul, Kendrick Lamar, NWA, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, The Game, The Beastie Boys, DMX, Masta Ace, Sublime, Public Enemy, the Jungle Brothers, Scarface, Black Milk, and countless others believe it or not. Riggins put together a mix entitled “Chopped Worm” for his tribute. “My idea was to chop a song that is so important to hip hop and also pay homage to 1 of the funkiest groups from one of the funkiest states. Ohio Players’ music will forever be relevant! RIP Sugarfoot,” Riggins wrote. Check it out here:
