SXSW 2013 will be an exciting year for jazz aficionados with more and more live music and jazz being represented, honored, performed, and discussed. Among the exciting features is a panel entitled “Miles Davis Bootleg 2: The Lost Quintet” which will discuss Davis’ 1969 live lineup that toured Europe and the subsequent box set releases of this year as well as their significance.

“Man, I wish this band had been recorded live because it was really a bad motherfucker,” Miles Davis explained of the “lost” quintet of 1969 that featured Davis on tour with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. The panel — which features our very own Meghan Stabile along with Vince Wilburn, Jr. (Miles Davis Properties, LLC), Imani & Bootie Brown (The Pharcyde), Ashley Kahn (Author), and Nell Mulderry (Boss Sounds) — will “consider and celebrate the lineup that reflected the fever pitch of the era, and predicted the future of improvised music.” This was a pivotal time for jazz inclusion and the panel will also be discussing Clive Davis’ role in getting Miles booked. Check out his historic letter:
