Musician Carline Ray, a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who was a member of the famed International Sweethearts of Rhythm and The Duke Ellington Orchestra among others has passed away at age 88. A graduate of both Julliard and Manhattan School of Music, Ms. Ray was an incredibly accomplished musician, playing bass, guitar, piano, and was also a proficient composer and vocalist. She was always an advocate of being called a “musician” who just happened to be female, rather than a “female musician,” and acted as an important mentor for many younger female musicians, including bassist Mimi Jones. Ms. Ray released her first solo vocal album this year. She leaves an important legacy as a role model for all musicians, and especially, for young women in the business. More via The New York Times
