Ambrose Akinmusire teams with singer/songwriter Becca Stevens on “Our Basement (ed),” a cut from The Imagined Savior LP that dropped on March 11th via Blue Note.

Akinmusire recently followed up his 2011 Blue Note release, When The Heart Emerges Glistening, with his new album, The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint. Akinmusire is joined by familiar faces including Walter Smith, III (sax), Charles Altura (guitar), Sam Harris (piano), Harish Raghavan (bass), and Justin Brown (drums). Also rocking with Akinmusire are the vocalists Theo Bleckmann, Cold Specks, and Becca Stevens as well as the Osso String Quartet and flutist Elena Penderhughes.

Similar to Ambrose’s previous albums, The Imagined Savior features tracks with imaginative titles like “Our Basement (ed),” written by singer/songwriter Becca Stevens. “She wrote that all herself,” comments Akinmusire, speaking of Stevens. “I gave her a story and a perspective to write from in words and she came up with it.” The story given to Stevens was about a homeless man who lived on the trumpeter’s block and who was able to save money that he donated it back to the church that fed him on weekends. “Our Basement (ed)” also features performances from the OSSO String Quartet.
