We ran a post two years ago asking you to help fund Otis Brown III‘s album. Today, we are proud to announce that Brown’s debut album, The Thought of You, is scheduled to drop Tuesday, August 26th via the newly minted Revive/Blue Note Records label, a new partnership between yours truly and the legendary Blue Note Records.
While we’re extremely pleased to announce Revive/Blue Note’s maiden voyage, we’re even more thrilled to be able to present the extraordinary group of musicians who are backing OB III in his debut album. The artists in question are Robert Glasper (keys), Keyon Harrold (trumpet), John Ellis (reeds), Ben Williams (bass), as well as special guests appearances from Shedrick Mitchell (organ) and Nir Felder (guitar). Contributions are also made by vocalists like Bilal, Gretchen Parlato, and Nikki Ross on The Thought of You. These highlight the sentiments of the album’s co-producer, Derrick Hodge, who says, “Otis has become one of those drummers who once you hear him play, his experience becomes your experience in the moment.”
With the exception of Williams, The Thought of You’s core quintet– consisting of Harrold, Ellis, Glasper, and Brown– can trace its playing roots back to when they were all in college at The New School. Camaraderie and the general feeling of companionship is a strong motif throughout The Thought of You. Two prime examples that go beyond college buddies hitting on the Revive/Blue Note record are songs like “Two Become One” and Gretchen Parlato’s rendition of Shania Twain’s “Still The One,” which are both dedicated to Brown’s wife of 14 years.
