Marc Cary, a prolific pianist and composer who’s played with everyone from Q-Tip to Dizzy Gillespie, just dropped a new track from the Focus Trio, his ensemble with bassist Rashaan Carter and drummer Sameer Gupta. One of the first releases since their album Four Directions from late last year, “Twelve Stories” features all three musicians playing in and around a central lick. Because of the band’s inimitable chemistry, the track is rhythmically experimental without ever losing its distinct groove. “Stories” is a trio arrangement of Cary’s solo piece “For Moseka” from the album For the Love of Abbey, his 2013 tribute to longtime collaborator Abbey Lincoln. As a trio tune, it becomes more playful, showcasing varied percussion and bass sounds on top of the fluid, 6/8 feel. Listen below, and look out for Cary’s next release sometime in 2015.
