San Francisco-born/NYC-based vocalist, composer and Space Captain front-woman Maralisa has a confident, developed style that makes her immediately recognizable. Though she cites soulful singers like Taj Mahal and Nina Simone as influences, the sonic landscapes she crafts in her music are refined and modern, leaving her voice as the solitary link to these legends. When first checking out her arrangement of Little Dragon’s “Twice” from her upcoming EP Sugarbird, fans of Simone will hear some of the influence in vocal tone. But where it comes to life is in the storytelling and emotion with which she infuses every word. Check out Maralisa’s arrangement of “Twice” below, and listen to the whole EP, Sugarbird here.
