Ray Angry is well in touch with his spiritual side. The accomplished solo pianist and frequent contributor to The Roots delves deep into musical meditation on his new single “Celebration Of Life Suite: Awakening,” which features the talents The Council of Goldfinger, along with a host of modern jazz greats. Drawing on the playing of Chris Potter, Nadia Washington, James Genus and Jeff Watts, Angry leads his ensemble through a kind of crashing sea; cymbal crashes and sax runs wash over everything in earshot as the track pushes the limits of what can classify as contemplation. Yes, this is an awakening, but it’s also a thunderous journey.

Built of sunlit chords that spread out like the first buds of spring, “Celebration of Life Suite: Awakening” is the latest piece of Supreme Sonacy to be released, and in a way is the perfect “final preview” before the LP — a modern compilation released exclusively by Revive — fully drops on August 7th. With vocals that form new chords and latticework piano fills, the track forms a giant mass out of small details and offers listeners nothing but growing rewards with each repeated listen. Premiered earlier Monday by Vibe, Ray Angry’s “Celebration” is a commemoration of musicianship, chance, improvisation, jazz. Listen to it below and pre-order Supreme Sonacy on iTunes today.
