Kendrick Scott We Are The Drum

Anyone familiar with some of the most influential albums of the last ten years, including Terence Blanchard‘s Grammy award winning A Tale of God’s Will and Gretchen Parlato‘s widely acclaimed The Lost and Found, will be familiar with Kendrick Scott‘s unmistakable voice. Expanding on the sound he crafted as part of Blanchard’s band, Scott went on to form Kendrick Scott Oracle, which has proven to be one of the most cutting edge ensembles around in recent years. Now, as we covered in a recent post, Scott is making his Blue Note debut with We Are The Drum. Though he is leading the new record which features six captivating new Kendrick Scott compositions, every member in the band contributed compositions to the project.

“It’s not a percussion-centered recording,” Scott reveals about his latest recording. “Everybody is invested in it in a different way. Everybody contributed. The accent is on ‘we’ in the title. There is a sense of community in how it was created and how we work together. There is a lot of space for each player to have their say.” The title track, which is also the opener, was co-written by the band and is an impressive introduction to this incarnation of the band.
