Igmar Thomas and the Revive Big Band are back in action. Following the new year, the group has many gigs coming up, including a monthly residency at Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem. On February 25th, the band will once more return to Ginny’s for a two-set night. Igmar Thomas, the composer, arranger, and bandleader of the group is widely recognized for his sharp insight into what it means to lead a big band in the modern era. The music of the RBB isn’t the Ellington or Henderson of the past, it is the sound of a big band with its eyes and ears set very much on the future. It is jazz in the modern tongue; music that, in the words of NPR, “connects the through-lines between hip-hop and its predecessors.” Thomas and the Big Band travel between the sounds of yesterday and today, savoring every step along the way.
