Marcus Strickland is one saxophonist to be reckoned with. He has been heard playing with artists such as Roy Haynes, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and Dave Douglas, and featured on albums like Supreme Sonacy No. 1 (Revive) and Grammy-nominated Fountain of Youth (Roy Haynes) – and that’s just the beginning. He is one of the most prolific saxophonists in the rebirth of jazz today, and his new album Nihil Novi promises to give audiences a taste of the Strickland sound they have come to crave. The album, his debut Revive/Blue Note release, features Strickland’s long-standing band Twi-life, which combines the talents of prominent musicians Keyon Harrold (trumpet), Kyle Miles (bass), Charles Haynes (drums), Mitch Henry (organ), and Masayuki “BIGYUKI” Hirano (keys). True to ethos of Revive Music’s stated mission, Nihil Novi takes cues from J Dilla’s MPC, Bartók’s Hungarian folk music, Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat as well as Mingus’s freewheeling jazz truths and melds them together into a singular musical axiom. The diverse influences within Strickland’s latest album are reflective of a commitment to elevate music by pushing the genre forward to create transcendent and spiritually moving sonic experiences. Join him on April 12 at (le) Poisson Rouge to celebrate its 04/15 release, with pre-order available on iTunes now.
