There’s nothing more classic than the soul-splicing sound of Miles Davis. Whether he was cooing out raspy standards or delving into the raucous unknown of free jazz, Davis established himself as a seminole figure in the evolution of jazz early on in his career. For decades, he shaped the sounds we have come to know as standard today, always moving one step ahead on the next and best from jazz. The public’s fascination with the artist has yet to fade, hence why the new biopic, Miles Ahead, is already generating immense buzz from Davis fans worldwide. The film will feature Don Cheadle as the embodiment of Miles Davis, but that signature Miles sound will come courtesy of NYC-based trumpeter Keyon Harrold. Once called “the future of trumpet” by Wynton Marsalis, Harrold is at the forefront of the new generation of jazz, carrying the torch of prolific trumpet while bringing his own edge of modernity to his sound. He has worked in the jazz idiom and beyond, stretching his sound to encompass not only unadulterated bebop and straight-ahead jazz, but also electronically-infused R&B and hip-hop. Having worked with everyone from Gregory Porter, Billy Harper, and Robert Glasper to Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Common, and Erykah Badu, Harrold has absorbed an enormous range of musical influence that in many ways can be traced back to Miles Davis, a one-of-a-kind legend who would have turned 90 this month. Catch Keyon Harrold live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Friday, May 13th as he celebrates the legacy of Miles Davis alongside other talents Derrick Hodge on bass, drummer Chris Dave, pianist/keyboardist Shedrick Mitchell, saxophonists Gary Bartz (5/13 ONLY) & David Liebman (5/14 ONLY), percussionist Taku Hiran, and spoken word by Quincy Troupe (co-author of Miles Davis’s autobiography).
