On June 19th, West Coast sax-sensation Kamasi Washington joined forces with Igmar Thomas and the Revive Big Band to close out an already killer weekend of sets at The Yards for this year’s DC JazzFest. Along with Washington, living legends Ravi Coltrane, Bilal, and Talib Kweli were key elements in Thomas’s artfully curated and crafted first installment of Journey Through the Legacy of Black Culture. Following the Big Band’s explosive set, which was met by a rapt audience’s palpable enthusiasm, Washington returned with his touring band – an incarnation of the celebrated collective West Coast Get Down – for his closing set. JazzTimes recently reviewed the show, providing a vivid and delighted recollection of a truly memorable end to the festival’s 10-day extravaganza. Read the article over at JazzTimes, and be sure to keep up to date with what’s next from Igmar Thomas and the Revive Big Band here.
