It was just last week that pianist James Francies thrilled the thousands that gathered in Central Park to take part in Igmar Thomas‘s A Journey Through the Legacy of Black Culture. At only 21 years old, this Houston-native is already leaving his mark – a recently signed Blue Note Records artist and two-time winner of Downbeat Award winner for composition and arranging, Francies has performed alongside Jeff “Tain” Watts, The Roots, Robert Glasper, Stefon Harris, Eric Harland, Chris Dave and elder statesmen Joe Lovano, Albert “Tootie Heath & Arturo Sandoval. Additionally, he has recorded with Jasmine Sullivan and Kendrick Lamar, and appeared at The Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival and The Kennedy Center. Equipped with a lifetime of experience already under his belt, this young giant will make his Jazz Standard debut as a band leader on Tuesday, August 30th, heading up an all-star group including Mike Moreno on guitar, Ben Williams on bass, and Jeremy Dutton on drums.
