Forward thinking trumpeter/composer John Raymond possesses a unique talent. His singular voice is warm and accessible without sacrificing one bit of adventurousness. Whether he’s playing demanding original compositions like those on his 2015 release Foreign Territory or reinventing some of the past century’s most well known songs with his band Real Feels as they did on their self titled release earlier this year, Raymond simultaneously invites and challenges listeners with his playing and writing.
Ahead of the release of the latest addition to the Real Feels discography, Real Feels – Live Vol. 1, we all get the chance to watch (and listen!) to John and his band make that magic happen live. Real Feels, composed of Raymond, guitarist Gilad Hekselman and drummer Colin Stranahan, recorded the majority of the new album at a show in Akron, Ohio, with the exception of “Minor Silverstein,” which was recorded in Los Angeles.
You can get a feel (no pun intended) for what the LA show was like in the video for “This Land Is Your Land,” their very original take on a melody made famous by folk singer Woody Guthrie. If you like it, you’re in luck; John Raymond & Real Feels are celebrating their album release at Cornelia Street Cafe on October 19, so you can watch them make more incredible music like this in person.
