Pianist Orrin Evans returns to drop a soulful rendition of Alan Brandt and Bob Hayme’s classic standard, “That’s All.” Featuring vocalist M’Balia, whose work with Evans stretches back to his neo-soul outfit Luv Park, “That’s All” proves to be a masterclass by a master musician. It’s one thing to throw out a few re-harmonized chords and call it a day, but Evans’s backbeat treatment of one of the most beautifully penned standards from the Great American Songbook provides the perfect balance between respecting the integrity of the song while putting a new twist on it.
Evans’s latest single clocks in as the 11th cut in his forthcoming 13-track LP entitled #knowingishalfthebattle. Slated to drop on Friday, October 7, #knowingishalfthebattle features an electrifying band that includes guitarists Kevin Eubanks, Kurt Rosenwinkel, bassist Luques Curtis, Mark Whitfield Jr. on the kit, saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis, as well as M’Balia who also provides her vocal stylings on the David Bowie classic, “Kooks.”
“We’re taught that with knowledge comes power,” Evans explains concerning the title for his third release for Smoke Session Records. “Which is true, but we never really realize that with knowledge comes responsibility. Then we have to figure out how to forget. When you let go of everything that you’ve been taught, the possibilities of what can happen on the bandstand are endless.”
Those endless possibilities also extend to the studio as magic was certainly captured during the recording of “That’s All” as Evans, M’Balia, Curtis and Whitfield all work together as one to produce an exemplary performance. Look below and listen for yourself. Just a warning though… you might find yourself wanting to replay this track over, and over, and over.
