Coming off a hot 2016, trumpeter Theo Croker is back at it with an forthcoming appearance at Joe’s Pub on January 19. But before Thursday hits, we’ve got a premiere of an electrifying live cut of Croker’s “We Can’t Breathe.” The original composition first appeared in the horn player’s critically-acclaimed LP Escape Velocity. Released back in May 2016, Croker’s full-length effort has since made its way to numerous end-of-the-year-best-of lists. Due to the popularity of Escape Velocity, it was only proper that Croker take his music around the globe including the continent of Europe where this stunning live rendition of “We Can’t Breathe” was captured.
Inspired by the the tragic death of Eric Garner and the general mistreatment of people of color who are socially and economically disadvantaged around the globe, “We Can’t Breathe” is a powerful reminder that we’re all one and if one of own is suffering, we are all suffering. Backed by a stellar cast of musicians including, Anthony Ware (tenor sax), Michael King (piano and Rhodes), Eric Wheeler (bass), and Kassa Overall (drums), this live iteration of Croker’s “We Can’t Breathe” serves as the perfect platform to entertain and more importantly educate people about the ills of our society.
