The Art of Cool Festival and Revive Music join forces to present the best jazz-influenced artists today. Called the “Coachella of Jazz,” Art of Cool’s mission is to present, promote and preserve jazz-influenced music. Similarly, Revive’s core mission is to create appreciation for the jazz tradition by producing genre bending, creative-concept live productions that inspire and educate audiences about the depths, origins and prominence of jazz in today’s modern music.
As co-presenters, Revive and Art of Cool are pleased to announce Journey Through The Legacy of Black Culture – a groundbreaking testament to the breadth of African diasporic musical traditions and their impact on American culture. Led by Igmar Thomas’ Revive Big Band, they fuse jazz, soul, blues, rock and r&b, to present a transformative series that peels back layers of appropriation and the noise of pop culture to translate the roots of black music according to the unifying rhythms at the foundation of the art-form.
The Revive Big Band presents a body of work reflective of their respect for the standard and unabashed sonic freedom. Labeled the “most electrifying young lions in jazz,” Revive Big Band makes music without walls that exists as a living homage to the black musical canon, from Louis Armstrong, and Marvin Gaye to James Brown. Special guests Goapele, Pharoahe Monch and Dr. Lonnie Smith, will join the band in honoring the classic compositions and innovators that have served as the heartbeat of their signature sound.
