Hailing from Chicago, six-piece soul/hip-hop Sidewalk Chalk is gearing up for their fourth full-length album An Orchid Is Born. Slated to drop on June 2nd via Ropeadope, the Chicago-based collective has been gaining steam ahead of the release date with premieres on Afropunk as well as a look via the good people at Okayplayer. We’re highlighting their animated video for “Dig” ahead of the band’s forthcoming Saturday, June 10 show at Nublu. Directed by Jack Blanket, the video shares feelings of the marginalized who have been victimized by police brutality.

“When I started writing the lyrics, I just had an image of a kid in funeral clothes waking up in a coffin and digging his way out of the ground,” recounts Rico Sisney — lead singer of the band. “In the entire song we never mention the race of any of the characters, but you automatically assume that the boy is black. We performed the song on tour and this woman was so upset that we were pushing the narrative that white cops kill black kids. That speaks to how prevalent and culturally embedded these stories are at this point.” Watch the powerful video for “Dig” below. Click here to snag tickets to watch Sidewalk Chalk at Nublu on 6/10.
