Innovative Harlem collective Freelance is slated to release their debut album Yes Today via Revive Music’s label division on Friday, May 11th. 2018. The thirteen-track album distilled from Freelance’s dynamic live performances is a lush, groove-dominant clinic in the power of seizing the moment that finds the band challenging listeners to take risks and embrace their passions. To avoid putting life off until tomorrow, and instead, say “yes today!” Buoyed by the effervescent 2017 dance single “Band Plays On,” and influenced by the musical footprints of Mint Condition, Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, and J Dilla, Freelance’s forthcoming album is their multifaceted contribution to the lexicon of millennial black music. Leaning into tough subject matter, leading with love and delivering seamless arrangements, the band bucks the current pop and trap trends to issue a direct challenge to the musical status quo. Band members Smithsoneon (vocals), Ausar the Ambassador (keyboards), Craig Hill (saxophone), Yasser Tejeda (guitar), David “DJ” Ginyard (bass), and Justin Tyson (drums) sat for an exclusive interview ahead of the release date for their highly-anticipated debut to discuss who they are, what they do and what it takes to make people fall in love with the idea of a band again.
