The legendary tap musician Savion Glover will be joining the Revive Big Band for their Blue Note Festival performance on 6/16 at Highline Ballroom featuring a slew of todays greatest musicians, led by trumpeter Igmar Thomas.
If The Revive Big Band is a “19-piece jazz army” (Complex Magazine), then what is their fight? Formed in 2010, the Big Band began as a “wouldn’t it be cool if…” kind of idea, where composer, arranger and trumpeter Igmar Thomas wanted to unite generations of like-minded musicians in presenting a new age of big bands. The project has grown to become one of the most exciting and imaginative bands – big or otherwise – in New York.
Revive Music hosts their renowned Evolution Jam Session on Thursday, July 19th at the Brooklyn Museum, featuring some of New York’s most prestigious jazz artists. This session will feature Sharel Cassity on saxophone, Michael Dease on trombone, Benito Gonzalez on piano, David Wong on bass, and Winard Harper on drums. Presented in partnership with WBGO. .
On Monday, May 7th, The Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival kicks off with Smalls Paradise ReCreated: Harlem After Dark at Harlem USA featuring Johnny O’Neal, Umar Hassan of The Last Poets, Sachal Vasandani, Sole Society + a late night Jam
The 2011 Giants of Jazz concert will honor drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath this year. Heath’s career spanned stints with John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon, JJ Johnson, and more. Other artists expected to perform will include Don Braden, Sharel Cassity, Cyrus Chestnut, Roy Hargrove, Bob Cranshaw and more! The event is held annually in South Orange, NJ.
It’s hard to imagine a more organically orchestrated and magical tribute to the late Guru than the one that we had on Thursday, April 21st. With the 400 or so attendees, there were many more of you out there who missed the night for whatever reason, and will never experience first-hand what we witnessed that night at Le Poisson Rouge.
The Revive Da Live Big Band Tribute to Guru was a night to remember.
