Jamire Williams’ ERIMAJ took crowds on a journey at Harlem Stage this past weekend. They have certainly have taken the reigns for music change today.
We’ve long been singing the praises of the the live band José James has out together, but this is just on another level. James and crew headed out to Amsterdam to team up with Amsterdam’s Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest (The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra) for a performance captured by Het Radio 4 Concerthuis.
This past weekend was a whirlwind of amazing music and as we sift through more and more of the recordings and videos, we’ll be bringing you an exclusive look at these incredible musicians, the dynamic arrangements, and the one of a kind musical moments that have to be heard!
We are proud to once again partner with the 2013 Winter Jazzfest in producing our annual Revive Music Stage taking place on Friday, Jan. 11th and Saturday, Jan. 12th with the first performance starting at 7:45pm and going all night until 4am on both nights. Performances will include the premier of ‘AFRO HARPING’, a tribute to Dorothy Ashby led by harpist Brandee Younger, our monthly remix live jazz party, CHURCH with Mark de Clive-Lowe, Otis Brown III Quintet, Marcus Strickland’s Twi-Life, Somi and many many more.
This week José James performed “Trouble” off of his upcoming album No Beginning, No End on the Conan O’Brien Show. As always it was a stellar performance with his band that boasts Kris Bowers on keys/piano, Solomon Dorsey on bass, Nate Smith on drums, Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, and Corey King on trombone. This is without a doubt one of the baddest live bands around now.
Producer. Engineer. Multi-instrumentalist. Singer? Jesse Fischer holds no bars with his latest Soul Cycle release. Retro Future is the manifestation of Fischer’s vision. A mix of acoustic, electric, and electronic instruments, the album ranges from original compositions to covers, and from old-school to the future. If there is one take-away from this release, it is that you can not underestimate the power and vision of true artists. If The Revive Big Band is a “19-piece jazz army” (Complex Magazine), then what is their fight? Formed in 2010, the Big Band began as a “wouldn’t it be cool if…” kind of idea, where composer, arranger and trumpeter Igmar Thomas wanted to unite generations of like-minded musicians in presenting a new age of big bands. The project has grown to become one of the most exciting and imaginative bands – big or otherwise – in New York.
Esperanza Spalding launches the Radio Music Society World Tour today! She will be in New York with her full ensemble on 4/21 at Webster Hall.
It’s kind of an organic way of me putting all of those things together. We can’t just call it one thing, or one specific genre, if you will. I like to call it “social music” because it’s for the people to enjoy. I’m really happy about it because it blends a little bit of everything with vocals and lyrics. The vocalists [do] not necessarily sing lyrics, but they are another instrument and will just sing the melodies versus melodies and lyrics. ERiMAJ explores that big beat, alternative rock and hip-hop—everything’s in there.
The web is on fire with Esperanza’s first single “Black Gold” from her upcoming release, Radio Music Society. Along with the single comes a thought-provoking music video that features a father picking his two sons up from school. After hearing they learned about Africa he questions the extent to which the teacher delved into the history of many of the oldest civilizations in the world.
