While each musician brought their own sound to the table, the group as a whole gelled extremely well. Nia Andrews gracefully commanded the melodies of the tracks, and Robinson’s verses were on point. Jaleel Shaw was an absolute freak of nature, ripping over the changes while de Clive-Lowe added filters, delays, and other assorted effects with his samplers. Kelley and Smith locked like a glove, providing a strong backbone to the overlying ethereal layers of synths, percussion, and samples.
In preparation for Winter JazzFest this weekend we dropped by the rehearsal for Marcus Strickland’s Twi-Life to get a sneak peak of this all-star band featuring Strickland on saxes, the legendary Ku-umba Frank Lacy on trombone, Yuki Hirano holding down the keys, Mark Kelley on bass, Charles Haynes on the drums, and emcee Raydar Ellis on the mic.

The last edition with Jose James and DJ Spinna was a success with a packed room of people dancing. On May 4th, MdCL will be joined by resident vocalist Nia Andrews, Jamire Williams (ERIMAJ/Christian Scott) on Drums, and Mark Kelley (The Roots) on bass.

Mark de Clive-Lowe continues to build on the success of his new CHURCH monthly series in New York at DROM. CHURCH is a whirlwind mix of live jazz, sampling and a DJ set.
