Dexter Story’s journey through the music industry is like few others. Seemingly living multiple lifetimes in his 48 years, this renaissance man has had careers spanning from product manager for artists like Snoop Dogg, Musiq Soulchild, & LL Cool J, to booking acts for a busy LA nightclub, being signed as a rap producer by Sony, managing Meshell Ndegeocello, and ultimately finding himself as an artist. We sat down to discuss Story’s debut solo record on Kindred Spirits entitled ‘Seasons,’ but got a lot more story than we paid for. Be sure to read Pt. 1 of our interview before delving into Pt. 2 below!
Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is one of the premier musicians, orchestrators, arrangers, and composers of our time undoubtedly. Blending his influences which range from J Dilla to Chopin, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and beyond has differentiated him as an artist who strongly represents the here and now. Luckily for us, the here and now for Miguel is recording both his debut solo record on Brainfeeder, Les Jardins Mystiques, as well as a string quartet record of cinematic improvisations entitled Quartetto Fantastico.
Join us as CHURCH continues with world-renowned DJ, producer, remixer, composer, musician, and Tru Thoughts recording artist Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL), alongside resident vocalist Nia Andrews (Janelle Monae/Common), James Genus (Chick Corea/Herbie Hancock) on bass, Eric Harland (Joshua Redman/McCoy Tyner) on drums, resident MC John Robinson (Lil Sci/Scienz of Life) and Special Guest Miguel Atwood-Ferguson
Friday, Oct. 5th Philip Dizack celebrates the release of his sophomore release, ‘End of Era’ at DROM featuring a string section and special guest Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.
Music has been on Philip Dizack’s mind since he was just a kid. “When I was twelve, I just knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” With his Truth Revolution Records debut, End of An Era, Dizack has brought together two amazing sets of musicians (Justin Brown, Sam Harris, Joe Saylor & Linda Oh, Kendrick Scott, Aaron Parks) to bring his concepts of life, love, and loss into perspective for our ears. The music is stunningly engaging, beautifully composed, and masterfully performed. Check out what Dizack had to say about the record and his thought process for the music.
By the 1940s Charlie Parker had already long established himself in the small group setting, yet he was still searching for new concepts and settings in which to package his music for audiences. “I was looking for new ways to say thing musically. New sound combinations,” Parker explained. Record producer Norman Granz sought to bring Parker into these new settings by way of touring, recording, and pairing him with the best musicians on the scene. As such, when the idea spawned for Bird to be paired with some of the most accomplished string players in New York, Parker fully embraced the notion, going around town telling people about his new band with “the cats from Koussevitsky’s band,” referring to Serge Koussevitsky who ran the New York Philharmonic at the time.
For the 20th Anniversary of the Charlie Parker Festival, Revive Music Group has been invited to produce a night of innovative music in honor of the jazz legend Charlie “Bird” Parker. As such, we will be presenting the timeless classic Charlie Parker with Strings reinterpreted and remixed by a number of DJs and producers before being arranged for a full orchestra by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson for a live performance in Marcus Garvey Park on 8/24/12.
Check out Sonnymoon’s new single off their forthcoming album due in May, “Just Before Dawn” featuring Miguel Atwood-Ferguson plus an alternate take.
