Legendary frontman of the Ohio Players Leroy Bonner died last week at the age of 69. “Sugarfoot” sang and played guitar with the group that dominated the charts in the ’70s with their thick-bottomed dance music and unique style. This week Detroit-native producer and musician Karriem Riggins payed homage to one of Sugarfoot’s most sampled tracks.

It was in this gray area that The Meters authored a major chapter in the history of modern sound; a gravelly narrative emanating from the guttural intersection of the soul and the second line – that incongruous fork in the road that should bear the permanent marker, birthplace of funk.
