The Sure Co. 5ive is a collaboration between drummer Richard Spaven and pianist Grant Windsor who create rhythmic and harmonic palettes to showcase both their own talents as well as those of their supporting artists. The London musicians have collaborated on so many projects in the past for other artists (including recording José James’ No Beginning No End and touring with Gregory Porter) that it just made sense to give folks a taste of their own style.

Jazz has employed new innovations in sound for centuries now, yet somewhere down the line the genre itself became encapsulated in a time vessel, rumored to be unchangeably preserved and pristine. Those who know jazz intimately know that Sun Ra’s first dabbling with Moog synthesizers, or the reverb or tape manipulation on Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew were examples of how jazz was pushed in directions that produced offspring that would later manifest in other shapes and forms. In the case of electronic music, today we may see them as divergent or different in the least, but in essence, no offspring is without DNA from their parent.

Last week, Jazz re:freshed kicked off their 5ive’s series of emerging artists with the vision and sound of drummer Richard Spaven and his album Spaven’s 5ive. Spaven, who has laid the rhythmic foundation for so many others, including the Robert Mitchell 3rio and 4Hero, now gets the chance to lay the groundwork for his own vision

Many of you probably don’t know who Richard Spaven is, but because most of us here over at The Revivalist happen to have an affinity for drummers, you will soon. With that said allow us to introduce the drummer extroidinaire Richard Spaven, mixing into his dynamic sound a little bit of hip-hop, dubstep, electronic and a whole lotta jazz. With wicked time signatures and organic homemade dubstep beats, this cat is definitely someone to have on the radar. Having recorded and toured the world over with artists such as Jose James, Mark da Clive-Lowe, The Cinematic Orchestra and Guru, the label Jazz Re:freshed releases Spaven’s debut mini-album “Spaven’s 5″ today. Special guest vocalists include DJ DooWop and Jose James playing alongside Robin Mullarkey and Vincent Helbers on bass and keys.
