So you missed the Newport Jazz Festival this year. Maybe you’ve been before; maybe you have just heard about the epic amount of music that occurs there each year—but either way there is no need for us to sing the praises of the festival because by now that’s common knowledge. What we’ve got for you today is some live recordings from this year’s festival courtesy of the folks over at NPR Music, WBGO as well as others. Check out the recordings from the 2013 Newport Jazz Festival and be sure to make it out next year—it’s worth the trip.

As we’re approaching Father’s Day, The Baylor’s have created yet another gift of music, this one dedicated to her late father, Rev. Dr. Dennis E. ew York is the headquarters of the ever-growing music movement that is the deconstructing of genre via progressive jazz fusion, courtesy of artists like Jose James, ERIMAJ and Christian Scott. In the wake of their Grammy win for Best R&B Album for Black Radio, Robert Glasper and his Experiment band (RGX) made their triumphant return to the city. The evening was part of Hennessey Home Session, an intimate gathering that found the band hobnobbing with their family, friends, fans, colleagues and media members, all of whom are a part of the forward-thinking community that’s reshaping music and culture for the better.
In their first post-Grammy NYC performance, the Robert Glasper Experiment (Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge, Casey Benjamin, & Mark Colenburg) will be bringing their finely tuned vision of Black American Music to the Gramercy Theatre on June 3rd, 2013 and we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away!
Tony Williams was the original headbanger birthed out of the jazz idiom. Less interested in the Sly Stone, Jimmy Hendrix, and James Brown aesthetic that Miles Davis was heading into at the time (circa 1969), Williams left the Second Great Quintet to put together a group of his own more aligned with his British rock contemporaries of The Who and Cream for instance. Those were the influences that birthed the Tony Williams Lifetime. Rounding out Lifetime — or the “organ trio on steroids” as Lenny White describes it — were John McLaughlin on electric guitar and Larry Young on organ, both of whom were equally as innovative with their own instruments and compositions as Williams was with the drums (though this lineup would change numerous times over the years).
The historic Newport Jazz Festival announced some very exciting additional acts for what is sure to be another great year for the festival. Featuring Wayne Shorter’s 80th Birthday Celebration: Wayne Shorter Quartet with special guests Herbie Hancock ,Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, & Brian Blade; for starters makes this a must-attend event.
