Far too often drummers are lost amongst virtuosic horn players and flexible vocalists. The gentle beauty of the former tends to supersede the technical ingenuity found within such a colossal vehicle like the drums. What I recognized almost immediately was that Haynes is simply not one of those guys lying in the cut. In fact, his voice is the most distinct of them all. He did not stand amongst the giants, but well above them.

On Tuesday October 9th, Symphony Space will be hosting an All-Star Jazz Concert to benefit the Obama-Biden 2012 Presidential Campaign. Jazz For Obama 2012 will feature artists like Ron Carter, Roy Haynes, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ravi Coltrane, Geri Allen, and many more legendary musicians. Though we are not picking sides in this election, this is an event is not to be missed (if it was Jazz for Romney 2012 featuring the same artists, we’d be just as excited for all the Republicans out there)!

If you haven’t checked out the JazzStories Podcast yet, this would be a good time to do so. Released every two weeks, the podcast which is produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center, “features jazz luminaries, in their own words, sharing stories of their lives in music.” This week their Roy Haynes segment became available for download and it is not to be missed.
