This summer marked the release of drum-wizard Justin Brown‘s debut album as a bandleader, NYEUSI. To celebrate, WBGO and Revive Music teamed up to present the official debut recording and album release party. Hosted at Nublu 151, the East Village’s favorite jazz outpost, this series of sets took place on June 29th. Lucky for those who missed it, WBGO filmed the show and has now released videos showcasing some of the night’s most not-to-be-missed moments.
Justin Brown might be the most in-demand drummer in jazz and beyond. Constantly touring internationally, amassing a large fan bases with Thundercat and Flying Lotus, Brown is also the core member of the critically acclaimed Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet, and has contributed percussion to projects led by Esperanza Spalding, Terence Blanchard, Bilal and Vijay Iyer. The virtuoso drummer makes his first statement as a leader with NYEUSI, which means “black,” in Swahili.
Alongside Brown, you’ll catch Mark Shim on the EWI, Jason Lindner on synths, Dennis Hamm behind the keys, and bassist Evan Marien.
