The world has lost an incredible talent. Roy Hargrove, at the young age of 49, passed away on Nov. 2nd, following complications with kidney failure. The Revive Music team has put together a list of some of our favorite songs, moments, solos, guest spots, and more from Hargrove as we mourn the passing of the legendary composer and trumpet player.
Texas-born Hargrove was discovered in high school by Wynton Marsalis and went on to become a seminal figure in today’s jazz, having shared the stage with legends such as Herbie Hancock, Nicholas Payton, Sonny Rollins, and many more. Known for his impeccable ability to play both traditional bebop styles and sounds rooted in hiphop, Roy was a key part of the neo-soul movement and a leader in bringing jazz to its current form. As a bandleader, Hargrove effortlessly fluctuated between the more traditional styles heard on albums like Earfood and the more modern sound of The RH Factor, an early example of the close relationship between hiphop and jazz. As a player, he can be heard across some of the most influential albums of the last 30 years, including D’Angelo’s Voodoo, Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun, Common’s Like Water for Chocolate, and many more. He will be sorely missed by audiences, collaborators, friends, and family alike.
