The Worldwide Awards (backed by Gilles Peterson) voted Hiatus Kaiyote as the Break-Through Artist of the Year for 2012. The year saw the Australian band release their debut record entitled Tawk Tomahawk as well as perform around the world and expanding their audience.

The Revivalist met up with singer Zara McFarlane to discuss some of the duos she’s worked with and some legendary ones that have influenced her own style.

I think it’s just different with jazz. Once you decide you’re going to do jazz, you realize it’s going to take you your whole life to do anything original and to get to a level that’s anywhere close to Ella, or Miles or any of these people, stylistically. I think anybody who thinks they’re, like, soaking in right away, is just not going to last long in jazz. It’s a whole different mindset. I wasn’t thinking about making a record, because I didn’t have anything original to say. I just wanted to learn the standards, and that takes years of practice and jam sessions and buying real books and trying to figure out what people are doing. It’s like trying to unlock a code.

Cultural Icon, DJ, producer, entrepreneur, and host Gilles Peterson will be leaving BBC Radio 1 after 13 years of amazing and enlightening work. The charismatic and insightful host brought music both new and old, well-known and rare to the world between his DJ sets, radio show, and countless outside projects. Here is a statement from Gilles:

Check out a link to Gilles Peterson’s radio broadcast that aired on Wednesday, Nov. 9th on BBC Radio with a sneak peak of a new Robert Glasper tune called “Move Love” featuring KING from their new record called Black Radio. It will be coming out Feb. 28th on Blue Note Records.

Gilles Peterson has announced the followup to his acclaimed look at the current music scene in Cuba, entitled Havana Cultura. This time around with Havana Cultura: The Search Continues Peterson presents a 2-disc look into the thriving Cuban music scene. The first CD includes an album full of original tracks assembled by Peterson and the Havana Cultura Band. The second CD looks further into the scene with a compilation of current artists featured throughout Cuba. The 2-disc set is due out November 14th.

The U.S. sanctions against Cuba have been in effect for so many decades that most of us know nothing of life before the fluid exchange between cultures. With Obama’s administration these policies have loosened a bit, and what we are able to witness this year is the Cuban Arts Festival traveling through New York City this March.
