So you missed the Newport Jazz Festival this year. Maybe you’ve been before; maybe you have just heard about the epic amount of music that occurs there each year—but either way there is no need for us to sing the praises of the festival because by now that’s common knowledge. What we’ve got for you today is some live recordings from this year’s festival courtesy of the folks over at NPR Music, WBGO as well as others. Check out the recordings from the 2013 Newport Jazz Festival and be sure to make it out next year—it’s worth the trip.

Revive Music hosts their renowned Evolution Jam Session on Thursday, July 19th at the Brooklyn Museum, featuring some of New York’s most prestigious jazz artists. This session will feature Sharel Cassity on saxophone, Michael Dease on trombone, Benito Gonzalez on piano, David Wong on bass, and Winard Harper on drums. Presented in partnership with WBGO. .

The 2012 Newport Jazz Festival will be held on August 4th and 5th in Newport, Rhode Island. Yet, don’t get too bummed out if you can’t make it out to the festival this year. NPR will be getting help from WBGO to stream a number of the performances live on their site from the “the grandfather of jazz festivals.”

The “Lee Morgan Story” collaboration grew from John Robinson and J. Rawl’s brilliant 2009 album The 1960′s “Jazz Revolution Again.” The album is a celebration of the connections of jazz and hip-hop and it is on this album that “The Lee Morgan Story” was first heard. On this tune John Robinson serves as not only an emcee but a story teller and historian. Acclaimed bassist Ben Williams recreated the tune and released it on his debut album State of the Art with a jazz band that features trumpeter Christian Scott.
